Lord of the flies is a dystopian novel which deals with a plane crash in a desert island,in which only boys children survived. At the beginning they tryed to make an organisation and elected a leader (Ralph) in order to survive together. They have to behave like adluts but they didn't succeed to get along each other.

200px-LordOfTheFliesBookCover

This book is very difficul because children are removed of innocence and honesty, it could shocked the reader and the story has a glaucous mood. It is often compared to Robinson Crusoe's story, people tell this a "robinsonade".

This book was adapted to movie in 1990 by Peter Brook.

flies

Here we can see that children became savages, they look miserable because they don't have any clothes, they are thins and the leader has mud on their faces.

On this picture they are three characters, Jack on the left, Ralph on the right and Piggy between us. Ralph got the power which is symbolised by a big shell, he was choosen to be the leader, but Jack desagrees with him ans dares tell his point of view. Piggy seems to be very serious because this little plumpy guy is holding the shell in his hand (we can't see it on this picture). However we can see that the others characters don't pay attention to him, it means that he is a sort of scapegoat.

You'll like this book if you enjoy read chocking stories which dare said the truth (in this book it concerns the human nature).

We will study one of his poems, extract from Songs of Innocence and of Experience, which is entitled "London".

London

I wander thro' each charter'd street,
Near where the charter'd Thames does flow.
And mark in every face I meet
Marks of weakness, marks of woe.

In every cry of every Man,
In every Infants cry of fear,
In every voice: in every ban,
The mind-forg'd manacles I hear

How the Chimney-sweepers cry
Every blackning Church appalls,
And the hapless Soldiers sigh
Runs in blood down Palace walls

But most thro' midnight streets I hear
How the youthful Harlots curse
Blasts the new-born Infants tear
And blights with plagues the Marriage hearse
WILLIAM BLAKE
This poem was written in 1794, it deals with the life in London during the war against France. BLake discribes the fear and the horror that he saw. He also talks about the work of the industry in London (Chimney-sweepers cry). This poem is very pessimistic, dark and gloomy, but it is realistic too. As William Blake is a Romantic poet, he wanted to denounce the problems of his society, we can say that he is engaged.
W. Blake was also a painter, in order to let you imagine his personality and his vision of the world, there are three of his pictures :

Despite the fact that this story is supposed to happen in the future, we can compare this to the gladiator fights. Rich people oblige poor people to kill each other just to make fun of them and feel superior.

According to us, this is a moved story which can represents the problems of our society, it denounces the way that people treat each other and people who don't belong to the same group.

We think that this story represent the human stupidity and could be current.

According to us, this novel was hard to read because there are a lot of flashbacks and it made us felt a little lost. This story is touching and sad. The realism of this story allows us to know better the slave's sadness. This book denounce slavery, and the superiority feeling that people have against minorities. We can also say that it is a kind of fighting against racism, linked to her her origins.

What does reading bring me ?

Reading is a hobby which had cross the times, and deserves to get more practice.

In our opinion, it is a kind of escape which allows us to let our imagination take the power. It enables people to "live" an other story through the novel. We could identify the characters, and their personality  or their lives. Thanks to that we could forget our problems, and our lives during the reading. For people who doesn't like reading it is to bad because it permits to improve culture, vocabulary and especially our way of life ( instead of watching TV, playing game... it is better to open our mind to the world). Moreover, when you watch a movie, you have to know that the book is always better ! ^^
